Combat

Combat is a large part of World of Warcraft. It's probably the best way to make money, it's the only way to gain experience, and it's neccessary to wage war. Every character created in World of Warcraft will almost instantly have to fight creeps and lesser monsters, here's some basic information about combat.

Health
Suprisingly enough, if you run out of health, your character will die. Health is the green bar in the top-left corner. If you move and hold your cursor over the health bar you can see exactly how much health you have. You can increase this number by leveling up, by increasing your stamina, or by getting items with properties which add more hitpoints. There are several means to regain your health during battle, particularly healing spells and health potions. After a battle you can heal by eating or sitting down. Your health will regenerate automatically while you are in combat.
Remember to keep some healing potions with you at all times, you never know when you're gonna need one.

Combat Times
Combat times vary depending on your level, the monster's level, class, equipment, spell usage and more. The higher the level of the monster, the longer it will take to kill it, because high-level creeps have a greater chance to resist your spells and dodge your attacks than lesser creeps. Elite monsters (level+) will take even longer to kill because they have increased hit points. The faster your weapon is, the more frequently will you be able to swing it. A spellcaster must wait for the length of the spell's cooldown until they can cast a spell again.

Stuns
If you are stunned during battle, you cannot do anything. You are frozen and just have to sit there until the stun has worn off. If you place your cursor over the stun icon in the top right you can see how long the stun is going to last.

Fear
Some monsters are capable of casting fear spells on you. These abilities cause you to lose total control over your character. The game (or the monster) will gain control over your character causing your character may run off in a random direction (your name will turn red). Since there's nothing you can do about it, you simply have to wait until this spell effect has worn off. If you place your mouse cursor over the icon for the spell or ability, you can see how long it will last. Dont forget to warn your party members that you've under the effects of a fear spell, for example, type: "Feared."

Charm
Some monsters cast charm spells which allow them to take control over your character. You will become hostile and may attack your own party members. Other party members can also target and attack you. As with fear, inform your party members that you are "Charmed!"

Poison
Many monsters can cast poison on your character. Enemy rogue type monsters can also use poisoned blades which cast a poison DoT (Damage over Time) on you. You can identify a poison spell from the green effects on your character. You will need to cure yourself with a spell that some classes have, wait for it to wear off on its own, or use a potion that can cure poison.

Curses
Some monsters have the ability to curse your character (spell) with various curses with all kinds of nasty effects Curses can potensially last a very long time, unless you or a party member is able to remove it by casting spells or using potions.

Disease
Disease is another negative spell that monsters or players (in PvP) can cast on your characters. Some of these diseases can actually spread to other players. As with curses, diseases can potensially last a very long time. You can check their length by placing your cursor over the disease icon. To remove the disease you will need to find a player that can cure disease or find an item or potion to do it yourself.

Immunity
Some monsters are immune to certain spells, if you get a message telling you that the monster is immune to a certain ability, you wont be able to hurt it, the best thing you can do is to try something else. Some immunities are temporary, certain monsters can cast immunity spells on themselves, rendering them immune for a certain period of time. If you're unsure if the monster is temporarily or permanently immune, check which buffs is currently affecting the creep|

Disarm
Some monsters can disarm your character. You will begin fighting hand-to-hand which you might notice will increase your unarmed skill. Disarm will only disarm weapons and will select the weapon in the off-hand if there is no weapon in the main hand slot.

Monster "Resists" your Spell
There is nothing you can do against a monster resisting your spell except keep casting. Monster resists typically happen when the monster is higher level than you, so hunting lower level mobs is your best bet if your current opponent repeatedly resists your spells. Monster resists are not the same thing as "resistances."

Monster Flee
Humanoid and certain other types of monsters run when they are about to die. They often run for help. You need to find some ability to stop them before they are able to draw other monsters into the fight. You can use a direct damage (dd) spell, an ability that slows or stuns the enemy, or an ability that holds a monster in place so that you can fight them. Otherwise you might have to fight the fleeing monster's buddies!

Monster Spell casting
If the monster starts casting a spell such as Healing, you should try to interrupt their spell casting. For example the Paladin's Fist of Justice. Other classes have their spells to interupt an enemies spellcasting, just be prepared and have them ready.

Spell Interruption
As with monsters, player spells can be interrupted. However, monsters can interrupt player spell casting simply by making an attack that does damage rather than using special spell interruption abilities. If you are attacked while casting a spell, extra time will be added to the casting progress bar. You do not damage the enemy while casting a spell, which means they are getting free hits on you. Quickly decide if the spell is worth the wait and damage, then act accordingly.

Casting spells on yourself
You can quickly cast a spell on yourself by holding down "alt" while clicking the spells hotkey.
